Find the treasures of Tomar

Tomar, where the Order of the Knights Templar was once located, is a charming city with great nartistic and cultural history. The city is very well known by the Convento de Cristo Monastery. This is one of the most important Portuguese buildings from the Renaissance. Take enough time to visit the monastery and discover some treasures, such as the images on the Renaissance portal, the symbolism of the Manueline window of the chapter house, the architectural details of the Claustro Principal and the outbuildings used for the rituals of the Knights Templar.

The old medieval part of the city is built in a shape of a cross. In the direction of the four cardinal points, is a monastery at each end. In the middle is the square Praça da República, with the Main Church São João Baptista. To the west is the hill with the castle and the Convento de Cristo monastery. In the streets around the center you will find small shops and the oldest café where you can still taste the delicious regional pastries.

Make a cultural walk in the Parque do Mouchão. In this cool place you can see the wooden water wheel, Roda do Mouchão, one of the city’s attractions, which dates back to the days when the mills and agricultural fields next to the river provided economic prosperity in Tomar.
